▣ 초 록

In recent years, the global energy landscape has been undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions and transition towards sustainable energy solutions. Amidst this shift, nuclear energy has resurfaced as a viable option, notably with advancements in reactor technology aimed at addressing past challenges related to safety, waste management, and cost. The development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) is at the forefront of this nuclear renaissance, offering a flexible, scalable, and potentially more economical alternative to traditional large-scale nuclear power plants. SMRs are perceived as pivotal in enhancing energy security and providing clean and reliable energy, thus playing a crucial role in meeting future energy demands and environmental goals.

As one of the emerging game-changers in the nuclear industry, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have garnered significant attention worldwide. Before delving into an in-depth discussion about SMRs, this seminar will provide a foundational overview of nuclear energy, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of SMRs.

The session will begin by defining SMRs, highlighting their unique characteristics that distinguish them from conventional nuclear reactors. Following this, a detailed examination of both domestic and international SMR development will be conducted, showcasing the operational features and deployment status of these advanced nuclear systems.

Furthermore, the seminar aims to outline the strategic approach and ongoing R&D initiatives within the South Korean nuclear sector, which are pivotal for advancing the development of SMRs. By analyzing these strategies and projects, we will assess the potential for commercialization of SMRs both in South Korea and globally.
