The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Yonsei University held the “2026 Summer Semester Overseas Intensive Lecture Series” from July 1 to 3. The lectures were held under the theme “Reinforcement Learning and AI” and were co-taught by Professor Won Chang-hee of Temple University in the United States and Professor Kim Jong-baek of Yonsei University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering.

A total of 54 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the program, which covered the core theories and algorithms of reinforcement learning—ranging from basic concepts to Markov Decision Processes, Dynamic Programming, Monte Carlo Learning, Temporal-Difference Learning, and Model-Free Control. In addition, through hands-on exercises using Python and Google Colab, students implemented reinforcement learning techniques themselves, studied use cases across various engineering fields—including robotics, manufacturing, and healthcare—and gained experience applying the latest AI technologies to real-world engineering problems.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Yonsei University plans to continue inviting distinguished international researchers to provide students with opportunities to engage with the latest research trends and cutting-edge engineering technologies, and to sustain its overseas intensive lecture series aimed at cultivating future engineering talent equipped with international research capabilities.
