Imaging the function and dynamics of the human ear is an extremely challenging task due to its minute anatomical structures and nanometric-scale movements in response to sound. By combining spectrally encoded endoscopy with phase-sensitive, spectral-domain interferometry, we demonstrate effective, noninvasive in vivo functional imaging of the vibrating human tympanic membrane. Our system attains high-speed and high-resolution imaging through a compact handheld probe, allowing to measure the amplitude and phase of the vibrational patterns generated within the tympanic membrane in response to a wide range of acoustic frequencies. The unique physiological data captured by the system allows measuring a wide range of clinically relevant parameters, offering a powerful experimental platform for studying middle and inner ear physiology.
