▣ Abstract

In this talk, I will discuss how we can leverage uncontrolled mechanical instabilities of nanomaterials, such as interfacial delamination or out-of-plane deformation that have been commonly observed and considered as inevitable topological defects or detriments to the structural integrity and functional performance of nanomaterials-based systems.  Contrary to such conventional wisdom, I have sought ways to leverage mechanical instabilities of nanomaterials to advance multi-functionalities of nanomaterials-based systems including strain-resilient electrical sustainability, strain-tunable excitonic characteristics (i.e., light-matter interaction), energy generation, and novel optoelectronic phenomena (e.g., out-of-plane electrical polarization/flexoelectricity) by manipulating interfacial characteristics (interfacial engineering) and mechanical deformation (strain-engineering) of the constituent nanomaterial layers.
