▣ Abstract

Hydrogel-based biomaterials are widely used in healthcare, food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products. In addition, recent advances in polymer sciences enable a wide variety of novel hydrogels for new emerging applications, including tissue engineering, controlled drug delivery, smart sensors, stretchable and wearable electronics, and energy storage and conversion devices. However, it is still extremely challenging to design and build functional products of these soft materials. This is primarily due to limited capability of manufacturing soft materials with accuracy and precision. Lack of underlying cross-talk mechanism between transport and mechanics in soft materials is the critical knowledge gap. Since these materials often contain cells, the cross-talk mechanism becomes more complex and leads to a new field of study, so-called "mechanobiology." In this talk, I will present my group's research to understand and manipulate the transport and mechanics in soft biomaterials. These include similarity of transport-induced mechanics, scaling law of particulate transport and cell-derived shrinking for 3D printed tumoroids.
