▣ Abstract

Ammonia has recently been considered to be the most attractive hydrogen carrier as the volumetric energy density is much higher than that of compressed hydrogen and it is relatively convenient to store and transport. The utilization of green ammonia produced by sustainable synthesis ways is believed to contribute to reach net zero emissions in the energy system. Ammonia as a fuel can be used to fuel cells as it can be decomposed into hydrogen and nitrogen via catalytic cracking. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), one of various fuel cells, can generate electricity through an electrochemical conversion of the hydrogen decomposed from ammonia because of the high operation temperature and the efficient catalyst of Ni in typical SOFC anodes. Thus, much effort has been given to directly utilize ammonia to SOFCs for power generation at high efficiency with no carbon dioxide emission. In this study, the current status of developing direct ammonia fueled SOFCs (DA-SOFCs) is present including the challenging issues to overcome. Finally, strategic tactics to resolve the limitations are proposed to accomplish the deployment of DA-SOFCs.
