Space exploration and settlement on the surface of the Moon and Mars will be feasible with sustainable, powerful and reliable power sources where solar energy doesn’t exist or instantaneous high power is required. Nuclear fission power generation with a Closed Brayton Cycle is the sensible choice, and the heat pipe is considered as the heat exchanger, the interface between the Brayton working fluid and reactor, due to the simplified design and reliability. The utilization of heat pipes in space nuclear reactors allows a high heat transfer rate by configuring an array of heat pipes. Effective thermal-fluid measurements for a bundle of heat pipes are needed to determine optimal and compact designs that are affordable to space power systems. In this talk, I would like to introduce the current progress of space exploration with space nuclear power generation systems and discuss the research on some issues in these systems. Finally, an approach to analyzing the thermal-fluid characteristics of the heat pipe heat exchanger for miniaturization and performance evaluation of space reactors will be presented.
