Biopolymers including the cytoskeletal filaments and nucleic acids exhibit conformational motion while possessing elastic properties. This lecture will introduce quantitative models to describe their behavior. Starting with the freely-joined chain model, the wormlike-chain model will be introduced, which covers the concept of persistence length, and the relation between the chain conformation and the its contour length. The concepts and quantitative descriptions introduced in this lecture form the basis for understanding their mechanical behavior in various biological and bioengineering applications.
