▣ Abstract

Power generation technology based on nuclear fusion will be a very challenging engineering technology that will change the future of mankind. In this seminar, we will review the basic principles of atomic fusion and discuss the tokamak from the viewpoint of engineering facilities to realize it. Let's look at what similarities it has with existing energy power plants in some technical aspects and try to understand the intrinsic differences in power generation principles. Then, as of 2023, I would like to briefly introduce Korea's nuclear fusion research capabilities, which are prominent in nuclear fusion research worldwide. Let's take a look at Korea's nuclear fusion research capabilities and future. KSTAR, already built and operated by Korea as a plasma research facility for nuclear fusion, contributed to the enrichment of the qualifications. In addition, Korea is a major stakeholder of the ITER International Project, which researches essential technologies for nuclear fusion power generation by concentrating its global capabilities. Then Korea will pave the way for the Korean nuclear fusion demonstration (K-DEMO) to advance to commercial power generation after the ITER project. Let's also take a look at the research. We hope this will be a time to look at nuclear fusion research that requires the capabilities of mechanical engineers in our time and in the future and to think about the role of mechanical engineers.
