▣ Abstract

Soft functional materials such as elastomers and hydrogels have become a popular material choice for diverse applications due to their unique advantages over conventional stiff engineering solids such as metals and plastics. However, their inherent softness and other characteristics make them challenging to manufacture into small and complicated geometries. In this talk, direct ink writing-based 3D printing will be discussed as a promising fabrication strategy for soft functional materials with three focuses: 1) 3D printing process, 2) novel 3D printable materials, and 3) new applications. The talk will provide various project-based examples for each focus accompanied by a behind story and considerations made during processes throughout the research journey to offer helpful perspectives for the growing PhD students.
