The need for alternative cooling technologies is growing because vapor-compression refrigeration requires high power consumption and relies on refrigerants with environmental concerns. In this study, we propose a liquid-state dipolarcaloric refrigeration cycle (DCE) using nitrate-based aqueous electrolytes as the working fluid. The concept is based on the idea that the dipolar alignment of water molecules, or solvation structure, varies with salt concentration and electric-field conditions. The proposed cycle achieves compressor-free refrigeration by regenerating concentration states through electrodialysis (ED), using entropy changes associated with water-ion interactions and dipolar alignment as the thermodynamic driving force, and repeatedly absorbing and rejecting heat through heat exchangers. A thermodynamic model was developed based on concentration-dependent chemical potential and entropy changes, and the system-level energy balance was evaluated by incorporating irreversible losses in the ED unit, including membrane resistance, current density, water transport, and ion transport. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine the effects of concentration swing, ED power input, heat exchanger effectiveness, and internal heat recovery on cooling capacity and COP. The results highlight the potential of ED-regenerated nitrate-based DCE systems for low-GWP, low-noise, and modular refrigeration.
