This talk is a part of a global effort to conquer cancer, the second leading cause of death worldwide and responsible for more than 600,000 deaths in the United States in 2020. Despite enormous investments in research, development, and workforce, there has been only limited clinical success as a viable cancer therapy. More recently, cancer therapy has seen the evolution of implantable medical devices (IMDs) into viable therapies due to its ability to localize the treatments, albeit limited in numbers. However, the current IMDs-mediated cancer therapies are usually limited to a single, non-replenishable administration per treatment. These limitations, coupled with several complications, such as painful surgery, infection risk in the catheter, device failure, etc., have largely hampered the usage of IMDs for cancer treatment. More importantly, cancer cannot be easily controlled by one type of treatment modality alone due to its complex, diverse, and heterogeneous nature. In this talk, therefore, I discuss a versatile engineering solution in the form of an acoustically powered implantable microsystem that delivers a single or combination of multimodal cancer therapeutics: oxygen (a precursor of oxygenating hypoxia tumor as well as cytotoxic reactive oxygen species, ROS), cisplatin (platinum-based chemotherapy agent), light (a modulator for ROS generation), and electric field (as a tumor-treating field). Combined, the proposed research will establish the field of ‘Acousto-Bioelectronics’ that will spur new theory and understanding for the next generation of implantable biomedical systems.
