Mechanical metamaterials enable tailored mechanical responses through architectural design and symmetry control. In this seminar, I will present recent work demonstrating how symmetry breaking leads to unconventional mechanical couplings and static nonreciprocity in architected lattice metamaterials. By combining micropolar elasticity theory with group-theoretic symmetry analysis, we identify coupling terms that are forbidden in centrosymmetric lattices but emerge naturally in non-centrosymmetric architectures. The talk covers both two- and three-dimensional lattice systems, with particular emphasis on newly uncovered couplings such as axial–bending interactions and rotational effects. Analytical formulations establish a direct correspondence between lattice symmetry classes and the structure of the effective elasticity tensor, enabling predictive and scalable material design. Numerical simulations and experimental observations further illustrate how tailored lattices can exhibit mode conversion, direction-dependent stiffness, and nonreciprocal static responses. These findings provide a unified theoretical framework for designing functional mechanical metamaterials with applications in mechanical signal transmission, robotic metamaterials, and physical intelligence.
