This seminar will start by introducing diverse fluid-mechanics projects conducted in the Park Research Group at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I will then focus on two projects in very different Reynolds number regimes. For both projects, the modeling, analysis, and computation will be presented along with their engineering applications. The first part is dedicated to a high Reynolds number flow (turbulent flow), focusing on three flow-control methods to investigate their drag-reduction effects. These methods include imposing an external force, adding long-chain polymers, and utilizing slippery surfaces. The second part is dedicated to a low Reynolds number flow (Stokes flow), where dynamics and rheology of complex fluids are investigated. The complex fluid is composed of conductive microparticles suspended in an electrolyte under the action of an electric field. In particular, I will present rheology control for modulating shear-thinning or shear-thickening of such suspensions via the magnitude and frequency of the electric field.
