Treatment of critically ill patients (called “critical care treatments”), which must be administered in an orchestrated fashion to a patient to restore the patient from injuries and pathophysiological conditions, can be automated via closed-loop control to assist clinicians with patient monitoring and titration tasks, thereby allowing them to focus on more critical high-level decision-making tasks.  So, there have been increasing interest and advances in the automation of various critical care treatments.  In this talk, I will first present the state-of-the-art of closed-loop controlled automated critical care treatment, identify critical technological gaps to be filled, and propose opportunities to advance closed-loop controlled automated critical care treatment: (i) access to unconventional and novel physiological variables via artifact-robust physiological measurement; (ii) situational-awareness and interpretability via holistic physiological monitoring; (iii) safe coordination and orchestration of multiple automated critical care treatments; and (iv) development of non-clinical evaluation methods specifically suited to closed-loop controlled automated critical care treatment systems.  Then, I will present highlights of our ongoing research effort to enable safe closed-loop-controlled automated critical care treatments, including generative modelling of complex physiological systems, prior-informed state estimation for and closed-loop control of highly uncertain physiological systems, safe orchestration of multiple conflicting medical treatments, and hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform for non-clinical testing of emerging automated critical care treatment technologies.  I will conclude the talk with a perspective on the future of medical autonomy.
