Uncertainties from manufacturing, materials, and operational environments are inherent in real-world mobility systems, often leading to performance variability and, in rare cases, catastrophic failures. To ensure reliability, it is crucial to incorporate uncertainty quantification (UQ) into the design process. While traditional methods like Monte Carlo simulation are computationally expensive for complex systems, polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) offers a game-changing alternative.
This seminar introduces PCE as a surrogate modeling technique that enables rapid and accurate UQ, reducing computational costs by up to 50 times compared to Monte Carlo methods while maintaining accuracy within 3%. We will showcase applications in the robust design of mobility components such as motors, crashworthiness, and braking systems, demonstrating how PCE-based UQ leads to safer and more reliable mobility solutions.
