Commemorating the centennial of quantum mechanics, this lecture explores the field’s remarkable evolution — from Planck’s quantization of energy and Einstein’s photoelectric effect to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and Schrödinger’s wave mechanics — and examines how these foundational discoveries laid the groundwork for quantum information science. Once purely theoretical concepts such as superposition, entanglement, and probabilistic measurement have now become the basis for transformative technologies, driving advances in quantum algorithms, achieving quantum supremacy, and enabling real-world breakthroughs in cryptography, molecular simulation, drug discovery, quantum neural networks, and large-scale optimization. As we transition from today’s NISQ era toward fully fault-tolerant quantum systems, quantum computing is rapidly emerging as a strategic platform technology with the potential to redefine industrial landscapes, accelerate scientific discovery, and profoundly enhance human quality of life in the decades ahead.
