Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability. Upper limb impairment is among its most common and debilitating outcomes. Such impairments restrict independence by limiting the ability to perform essential activities of daily living, such as self-care, employment, and recreation. Despite standard rehabilitation, many stroke survivors fail to fully recover their upper limb function. This shortfall underscores the urgent need for more effective interventions. Our research develops novel rehabilitation technologies that directly target impairment mechanisms. We first investigate biomechanical and neural processes underlying impairment and recovery. We use multimodal assessments, including standardized clinical measures, motion capture, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and electroencephalogram (EEG), to characterize motor control, brain dynamics, neural integrity and plasticity. Based on these insights, we develop novel treatments that address the impairment mechanism and promote recovery. We design innovative treatments that integrate virtual reality, robotics, game-based biofeedback, and wearable devices. These technologies are rigorously evaluated in clinical trials with stroke survivors to determine their effectiveness across recovery stages. Exemplary development of novel rehabilitation technologies will be presented in this talk. By combining mechanistic insights with technological innovation, we aim to advance rehabilitation strategies that enhance functional recovery and improve quality of life for individuals living with stroke.
